Folsom Garden Club

Promoting the Love of Gardening

The annual “Sunday in the Gardens” tour hosted by the Folsom Garden Club does more than provide great gardening inspiration for area gardeners. It also gives hope for those who aspire to become future professional gardeners.

Proceeds from April 2007's very successful garden tour of six Folsom homes allowed the club to present two $1,000 scholarships to deserving college students.  Recipients of the Folsom Garden Club Scholarship must be in good standing with their school, with a major in horticulture.  Each of this year’s recipients is a student at American River College.  There were three winners selected this year (2008).

Darlene Espinoza -- She lives in Sacramento and is working on an A.S.degree in horticulture. She has an overall GPA of 3.75 and a GPA of 4.0 in horticulture courses.  She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and hopes to work as a groundskeeper for an agency that focuses on environmental issues.  She plans to continue her education at either Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo or UC Davis. Darlene is currently redesigning her her front yard and is using only plants native to California. She works at Fairytale Town in Sacramento and plays the bass guitar as a hobby.

Megan Oslin -- lives in Carmichael.  She will graduate next May with a double major in Landscape Industry and Nursery Practices.  She has an overall GPA of 3.1 and a GPA of 3.8 in horticulture classes.  Megan is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.  She spent the summer working as an intern at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida, learning how the park keeps its landscaping so beautiful.  She will transfer to UC Davis and major in environmental and urban forestry and she plans to be a landscape designer.  She volunteers at Bayside Church in Granite Bay and with the Placer County SPCA.

Marieka Anne Schrader -- lives in Davis and will start work on a B.A. degree in landscape architecture in the fall.  She will take additional courses to get a contractor's license.  She has worked for seven years as an environmental planner for Galvin Preservation Associates and the California Department of Transportation.  Her goal is to become a landscape architect.  As a hobby she is active in musical theater, snowboarding, and running trail races in Northern California.
